The English Football Association (FA) has announced Nike partnership

The English Football Association (FA) has announced a new partnership with Nike running through July 2018, ending its long relationship with Umbro.

Monday’s announcement had been widely anticipated after the American sportswear giant in May revealed its intention to sell Umbro and focus its efforts on driving growth in its own brand just four years after having acquired the football-focused British company. Nike will now design and create the kits for men and women’s England teams at every level, with the first kits due to be launched in Spring 2013.

Nike said the deal represents a “substantial investment” and it will also assume sponsorship and support of St George’s Park, the home of the National Football Centre in Burton-upon-Trent, along with becoming a supporting partner of Wembley Stadium. Nike will serve in the same capacity for the FA Cup, supplying match balls for games at each level of the world’s most famous club cup competition. The deal continues Nike’s bid to retain the key contracts held by Umbro. Earlier this year, Premier League champion Manchester City switched its kit supplier deal from Umbro to Nike, with the agreement set to start in the 2013-14 season and run through to 2019. “The pride and passion of England fans is renowned throughout the football world and we are delighted to partner with the FA”, said Nike Brand president Charlie Denson. “We look forward to supporting England teams at every level with innovative product technology and playing our part to help develop the future of English football through our support of St George’s Park.”

FA general secretary, Alex Horne, added:  “I am delighted that the FA has secured this new wide-ranging and comprehensive partnership with Nike.  It is an extremely exciting time for both parties with the opening of St George’s Park this year and the FA’s 150th anniversary in 2013. I would also like to place on record our gratitude to Umbro and their significant contribution to the game, the FA and England teams, over a 60-year period.”
