First things first:

Our Opening Night is this Thursday, November 27th, at 7pm at TIFF Bell Lightbox with GETULIO, by João Jardim.
Getulio was the 17th president of Brazil and faced incredible pressure from the opposition and the military forces in 1954. The political crisis lead to his suicide with a bullet to his heart, and this film shows Getulio’s last 19 days of life.

This unique production used both the actual location and weapon of Getulio’s suicide. It stars Tony Ramos, Drica Moraes and Alexandre Nero with soundtrack performed by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, and is co-presented by NOW Magazine.

When Brazilians were fighting for their right to vote after decades of a dictatorship, some prominent soccer players came along, discussing politics and pressuring their club for democracy. Black and White Democracy, by Pedro Asbeg. Not the most politically correct movie on the planet, My Mother is a Character was a big box office in Brazil last year and tells the story of a mother with a filthy mouth and her two teenager children. The movie is loosely based on the real life of Paulo Gustavo, a gay Brazilian comedian, and his relationship with his mother (wait until the credits to see a home made video with Paulo Gustavo and his mother to better understand everything). At TIFF Bell Lightbox on Saturday, November 29th, 2:00pm. Co-presented by Lula Music and Arts Centre.

A woman wants revenge, so she goes on a cruise. The same cruise in which her former husband is having his honeymoon with his new wife. Things get funny, and cupid plays some tricks. How not to love a movie about a dog suffering from narcolepsy attacks when excited? With Leandra Leal, Bruno Gagliasso, Rafinha Bastos e Danilo Gentili, The Dognapper is all about how a 30-year-old slacker decides to take action when his girlfriend dumps him and takes their dog with her. If you are interested in coming of age dramas, social commentaries, emotions behind the characters actions, and if you also know how to appreciate good acting, especially from young actors in their debut features, come to see these two titles:

Casa Grande (or the Ballad of Poor Jean) is also based on its director’s life. Jean, as it happened to Fellipe Barbosa, is a privileged teenager living in an affluent Rio neighborhood, but his family is facing financial problems and struggling to maintain their lifestyle. In its very own and unique category, we have Never too Old to Meow, a well made intriguing psychological thriller that will leave you at the edge of your seat. Pay special attention to the fact that writer Regina Polk, the main character in the movie, is struggling with the end of her newest book. She has three different endings, and the movie itself has a similar dilemma. Riveting, dark and intense. By Rafael Primot, with Regina Duarte and Bárbara Paz. Saturday, November 29th, 5:45pm. One more movie in its own category is Time and the Wind, based on Érico Veríssimo’s book. This cinematographic version directed by Jayme Monjardim follows the steps of two rival families during 150 years of love, conflict, and epic scenes.

A bonus is the astonishing landscapes from Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme southern area of Brazil, a place where our cowboys, the gauchos, drink erva mate on the top of their horses while trying to tame nature and settle with their families.
